This Classic Homemade Meatloaf recipe is the traditional meatloaf that we all know and love. It is so flavorful that I look forward to eating the leftovers over the next few days (hello meatloaf sandwich, I’m looking at you)

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 white onion
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1+1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1+1/2 cup milk
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley
  • 1/4 cup italian seasoning
  • 2/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground pepper
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes, optional
  • 1 jar tomato sauce

Method

  • 1)

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (176 degrees C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  • 2)

Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir onions in hot oil until translucent, about 20 minutes. Add garlic and saute for about 30 seconds. Remove skillet from heat and cool onion mixture to room temperature.

  • 3)

Place bread crumbs in a large bowl. Add milk and stir with a fork until combined. Wait until milk is absorbed into the breadcrumbs, 5 to 10 minutes.

  • 4)

Combine ground beef, ground pork, cooled onion mixture, parsley, Parmesan cheese, eggs, salt, black pepper, breadcrumbs and red pepper flakes in a bowl. Stir until the mixture is evenly combined.

  • 5)

Shape meat mixture into a 3x4x10-inch meatloaf. Pour tomato sauce over the loaf and into the bottom of the dish.

  • 6)

Bake in the preheated oven until no longer pink in the center, about 1 hour 20 minutes. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).
Let meatloaf rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Step2 is optional, feel free to skip if you do not want to bother with the onions.  In that case you do not need the olive oil and butter.  ( ingredient 2 &3)
  • You can use the following meat mixture:  (1lb of pork & 1lb of beef,  1lb of pork & 1lb of turkey, 1lb of beef & 1 lb of veal)
